THON

As the Penn State alma mater goes, “PENN! STATE! Forever…,” I wanted to design a necklace that symbolizes that pride and embodies the passion that Penn State students and alumni have for their school, while supporting a wonderful cause that is close to their heart, as well as mine.
Being married to a Penn State grad and growing up in Pennsylvania, I have seen firsthand the never-ending love these alumni have for their university, and more importantly, for the The Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, affectionately known as just “THON.” This annual 46-hour no sleeping, no standing dance marathon is the largest student run philanthropy in the world. THON’s mission is to conquer pediatric cancer by providing outstanding emotional and financial support to the children, families, researchers, and staff of the Four Diamonds Fund at the Hershey Medical Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Last year, the organization set a record by raising over $10,000,000!
My sister in law, a THON 2011 Captain, spent countless hours promoting THON and sharing so many stories with our family, that I’ve grown to understand and experience the love and dedication that the Nittany Lions have for the Four Diamonds families and dancing for a cure. It’s clear that their fight against pediatric cancer has no limits, just like the infinity symbol I have chosen for this piece.
